island tour with a car

Our first island tour with the car was kindly driven by Edgar. Traffic here rides on the left-hand side of the road and the driver sits on the right-hand side of the car. This meant some rethinking for Edgar in the first place, but he managed well.

It was  supposed to take us 20 minutes to find the Maracas Beach, which is said to be one of the most beautiful of the whole island and the place where Sparrow wanted to test his new surfboard. Well, after 1 hour we sorted out that we got lost… And after two, we reached the top of the hill behind which Maracas was told us to be [see Sparrows creasy mien to imagine the mood he was in by then].

At that point we also stopped at a candy shop to lift up Sparrows mood. The balls you see in the third and fourth pot, are “Tamarind balls” and made out of the fruit we introduced to you in Natal, the Tamarind (that sour one, you remember?).

[Photo : Maracas Bay]  Well, the fruit is basically pealed, mixed with salt and pepper, squeezed all up and then rolled into a ball-shape. The whole thing gets some sugar on top to make you think it tastes well and hence buy it. If you are rather up to a lovely sweet experience… you should better leave your fingers off it. Otherwise it´s an excellent snack obviously… :-)

After we had finally arrived at our place to be, Sparrow already lost his appetite in surfing. (As you might understand from the photo, Maracas is NO surfing beach). Instead, our appetite in some more local food had grown, reason why we went to Mom´s Bake & Shark Kiosk.

Mommy was lovely to us, she prepared three big bake & shark sandwiches. That tasted basically like a normal fried fish in a type of “salty donut”. Not the best for a slim beach figure… Together with this comes a good STAG, one of Trinidads best known beers and told to be A MEN`S BEER. At least in its advertisement. Fine also had it – and loved it anyhow. Cheers!
